Haywood L. Strickland
Haywood Strickland was elected the 16th president of Wiley University on September 12, 2000. As the President and CEO, he brings extensive higher education administration and fund-raising experience to Wiley University, where he hopes to create a new milieu and achieve excellence in the life of the College.
Indeed, since Strickland assumed leadership, Wiley University has witnessed positive changes in the management and operations of the institution. He hopes to achieve true excellence at Wiley University as envisioned by its founders through his hands-on approach, visionary leadership, proactive planning, and prudent fiscal practices. Strickland is systematically putting in place mechanisms that promote performance, accountability, and institutional effectiveness through sound management principles.
Most importantly, he is promoting teamwork with the philosophy of building trust through fair play. This simple, but very important management principle, is based on fostering team spirit and team effort that will permeate the college community. Once achieved, team spirit will solidify the Wiley University family and further cement the relationship between the College and the larger community. As a result, Wiley University will be positioned in its rightful place to compete or surpass its peers in imparting knowledge to the young adults of society through teaching, research, and public service in the academic arena.
By creating these favorable conditions, Wiley University will be able to provide a superior education to its students in a truly caring and nurturing environment that fosters the production of competitive, quality, and well-rounded graduates for the local economy in the state of Texas, the nation, and the world. Ultimately, Wiley University wishes to promote pride among all its stakeholders through its solid performance in academe and the global marketplace.
David L. Beckley, Ph.D.
David L. Beckley, the longest tenured senior college president in Mississippi, was appointed president of Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi on January 16, 1993, and assumed the position on July 1, 1993. Before assuming the position as 11th president of Rust College, he served as 12th president of Wiley University in Marshall, TX (1987-1993).
Under his leadership at Wiley University, the College improved its management, retired outstanding building bonds and federal loans, and renovated campus facilities. In addition, the endowment fund increased, accumulated fund deficits of $1.5 million were retired, and the percentage of terminal faculty degrees increased from 42 percent in 1987 to more than 50 percent in 1992.
Since returning to Mississippi, he has been elected Chair of the Mississippi Association of Independent Colleges, President of the Mississippi Association of Colleges, member of NCAA Division III Presidents Council, President of the National Association of Schools and Colleges of the United Methodist Church (NASCUMC), Chair of the Member Presidents of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) 2000-02, Board of Directors of the Methodist Health Systems, Inc., Memphis, TN, and the University Senate of the United Methodist Church, where he chaired the Black College Council, SERVE Board, Yocona Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare Foundation (1999-2000), Black Methodists for Church Renewal, United Methodist Senior Services of Mississippi, Inc. (1999-2008), the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (2002-2008), the CREATE Board, the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters, Mississippi Access for Justice Commission, Mississippi Civil Rights Museum Commission, and Batesville Job Corp Board of Directors.
He is a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Professional Men’s Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi National Fraternity, Inc., and a 33° Mason.
A 1967 graduate of Rust College, Beckley became the third alumnus to serve his alma mater as president. In addition to the Rust College bachelor’s degree, Beckley holds both the M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees in Higher Education Administration from the University of Mississippi.
Since accepting the presidency of Rust College, the College’s endowment fund has grown from $13 million to $23 million, reaffirmation of regional accreditation with Specialty Accreditation received from the Department of Social Work by the Council on Social Work Education. The College celebrated the 43rd consecutive year of a balanced budget with the close of the 2010-2011 fiscal year in June of 2011.
Among his recent awards are the Silver Beaver Award, Boy Scouts of America; Outstanding Education Alumni Award, University of Mississippi; Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award, National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education; Citizen of the Year, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Service Award, NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association); 2010 Man of Excellence Award presented by the Tri-State Defender Newspaper of Memphis, TN, and President of the Year, National Association of African American Honors Programs.
He and his wife, the former Gemma Douglas, have two daughters, Jacqueline B. Abdulah, a public school teacher in Birmingham, Alabama, and Lisa B. Roberts, an associate professor at Tallahassee Community College and operator of a music school specializing in Harp; one granddaughter, Christian Samone Lampley; and a grandson, David A. Roberts.
Roslyn Clark Artis
Effective September 1, 2017, Dr. Roslyn Artis will become the 14th President of Benedict College. She will become the first female President in the College’s 147-year history. Dr. Artis brings an impressive mix of higher education and corporate experience.
As President of Florida Memorial College, she led an unprecedented academic innovation of several programs, expansion of online courses, and developed new majors in high-demand fields. Additionally, she created academic centers of excellence and updated the University’s technology infrastructure and website. She led the development of the University’s Five-Year Strategic Planning Process and increased grant writing productivity. Since assuming the presidency in 2013, unrestricted gifts increased 20% (year over year), restricted gifts increased by 38 percent, and revenue from grants and sponsored research increased by 22 percent. Dr. Artis is also credited with soliciting and receiving the largest gift from a single donor ($3.8 M) in the institution’s history. She completed construction on a state-of-the-art Science Annex and a comprehensive Athletic Facility and Wellness Center on campus. Dr. Artis initiated and consummated strategic partnerships and collaborations between the University and external public and private entities for the purpose of revenue generation and the visibility for the institution.
Dr. Artis is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where she earned a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Policy. She also holds a Juris Doctorate degree from West Virginia University College of Law, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from West Virginia State University. Additionally, she holds a Certificate of Fundraising Management from Indiana University and a Certificate of Mastery in Prior Learning Assessment from DePaul University.
Artis is married to Selby Artis and is the mother of three: Christopher, Jayden and Jocelyn.
Dr. Logan C. Hampton
Logan C. Hampton was named 10th President of Lane College by the Lane College Board of Trustees on June 12, 2014.
Dr. Hampton has a doctorate in higher education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, received a master's degree in student personnel services from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, and a bachelor's degree in biology from Arkansas Tech University. He also is a graduate of the Harvard Institute of Management and Leadership in Education. Before UALR, Hampton held positions at Texas A & M University, Texas Christian University, and the University of Central Arkansas.
Prior to coming to Lane College, Hampton served in numerous student services capacities at UALR. His most recent appointment at UALR was Vice Provost for Student Affairs. In this position, Dr. Hampton served as the chief student affairs officer and led the student development and student life programs, including judicial affairs, budgetary and administrative services. In addition to working as a higher education administrator, Hampton was a member of the Board of Trustees for Arkansas Baptist College.
He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three children: Elise, Crystal and Logan III.
Dr. Andrea Lewis Miller
Andrea Lewis Miller, Ph.D., made history when the LeMoyne-Owen College Board of Trustees elected her to serve as the college’s 12th president. She took office September 1, 2015, becoming the first woman and the second alumnus to serve as president since the College was founded in 1862.
Miller has more than 20 years of experience in higher education. Prior to taking office at LeMoyne-Owen, she served as chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) in Louisiana where she provided leadership to a merger with Capital Area Technical College. Prior to that, Dr. Miller served for five years as chancellor of SOWELA Technical Community College in Louisiana. She transformed this former technical college into a comprehensive technical community college while leading it through its first SACSCOC regional accreditation. SOWELA’s enrollment increased by 67 percent during her tenure.
Miller is a Memphis native who also served for six years as provost/executive vice president for Academic and Student Affairs at Southwest Tennessee Community College where she was responsible for strategic planning and institutional research. Prior to her leadership role at community colleges, Miller spent several years in academic administration at four-year institutions. She served for six years as vice president for Academic Affairs/dean of faculty at LeMoyne-Owen College, and as an assistant dean in the College of Human and Community Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Miller has acquired over 12 million dollars in grant and contracts to support research, curriculum development and professional development activities in science and technology. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Cell and Developmental Biology. She received a Post Doctoral Fellowship from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She has spent summers engaged in biomedical research at the Marine Biological Laboratories (MBL), Woods Hole, MA and at Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL), Los Alamos, NM.
Dr. Myrtes Dunn Green
Dr. Myrtes Dunn Green received her Ph.D. in Higher Education from The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL. She is the Assistant to the President and Director of Title III at Lawson State Community where she assists with a wide range of complex and sensitive executive and administrative duties. Dr. Dunn Green previously served at Stillman College as the Dean of Education and Director of Planning, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Assistant to the President for Institutional Effectiveness. She assisted Stillman College in gaining initial accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Dunn Green is a Committee Chairperson for SACSCOC and consultant to higher education institutions for the development and review of Quality Enhancement Plans, Compliance Certification Documents and Fifth-Year Interim Reports for submission to the SACSCOC. At Lawson State, she served as the COC SACS reaffirmation of accreditation chairperson. She has also served as an on-site evaluator for over twenty-five institutions as well as an off-site evaluator. She was also a QEP evaluator/consultant and a peer trainer for institutional effectiveness.
Dr. Billy C. Hawkins
A native of Kent, Ohio, Billy C.Hawkins, Ph.D., holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Teacher Education from Ferris State University, a Master of Arts degree in Education Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Doctorate of Philosophy from Michigan State University in Education Administration. He has completed post-doctoral studies at Harvard University.
Hawkins has been in education for 36 years. He began his successful career as a teacher in the Lansing Michigan Public Schools System. His passion for teaching led him to the field of higher education where he has served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs/Professor at Mississippi Valley State University; Vice President for Academic Affairs/Professor at Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia; Acting Dean, Associate Dean, and Assistant Dean/Professor in the College of Education at Ferris State University; and as Director of the Educational Opportunity Program, State University of New York at Morrisville College.
Hawkins became the 20th president of Talladega College on January 1, 2008. He has transformed Talladega College and is moving it forward to its return of preeminence. Since his arrival, student enrollment has increased more than 70 percent, the entire physical plant has been upgraded, one classroom building has been renovated, restored and reopened; three dormitories were refurbished, a new police station was built, a $4.5 million rehabilitation/restoration of Foster Hall Dormitory began, finances have been restructured and stabilized, new academic programs have been added; he successfully guided the institution through a new ten year SACS Accreditation, the College gained reinstatement to the NAIA National Athletic Association and won three national championships in men’s and women’s basketball.
Previously, he served as the 20th president of Texas College from 2000 to 2007. Under Hawkins’ leadership, Texas College underwent a complete transformation and revitalization. Tremendous growth was evident in literally every area of the institution including an 82 percent increase in student enrollment within the first ten months of his tenure. To his credit, the institution stabilized its finances, regained accreditation in 2001, and regained membership in UNCF.
Hawkins implemented five new academic programs, constructed three new facilities, remodeled all academic and student service facilities, procured property assets, eliminated all long-term debt, and started seven new athletic programs, which won three championships. Adding to the schools successful turnaround, the college received a new 10-year accreditation in 2006.
An advocate for education, Hawkins was featured on the ABC Evening News with the late Peter Jennings and the U.S. News and World Report. He has been listed in Who’s Who among Executives and Professionals in 2005-2006. He is the author of two books, “Educating All Students (A Pathway to Success)”, and “Reaching for the Stars.” Recognized for his expertise in the education of our nation’s young people, he has been the keynote speaker at regional and national conferences and has testified before committees of the U.S. Congress.
Hawkins currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of the Commission on Colleges, Board of Directors of the Ritz Theate in Talladega and has served on numerous other boards including being a member of the Southside Virginia Business and Education Commission appointed by Mr. James S. Gilmore, III, former Governor of Virginia.
Additionally, he was appointed to serve on the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Capital Financing Advisory Board by former Secretary of Education Rod Page. Also, he serves as a member of the UNCF Board of Directors, and is a current member of the NAIA President’s Council. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Most recently in 2011, he was a recipient of the Ultimate 50 Who’s Who of Birmingham Award; he received the Omega Century Award of Excellence in Education from the National Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He received the National Associate of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc. Achievement Award, and the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators Leadership Award. Hawkins was inducted into the Kent City Schools Hall of Fame in 2004 and in 2007. He was also inducted into the Elementary Alumni Hall of Fame in Kent, Ohio.
